Mail Call From Afghanistan!

Words For Warriors has been supporting Sgt. Jeffery Tumey through his deployment in Afghanistan. He has received a number of letters, as he is one of the few who specifically requested letters from students. A memo went out to teachers with a little about Sgt. Tumey's background. Mr. Tripplet's 1st grade class and Mrs. Bricker's 3rd grade class responded to Sgt. Tumey's call for mail. He is currently answering their letters, meanwhile I received a box of thanks.

Hey! Thank you for all you have done for myself and the Soldiers' here. I know you keep very busy with a lot of stuff including your family life. I am sure that you have a pretty hectic schedule daily. I am also thankful that I have found a pretty cool friend like you. It's hard to trust hardly anyone in my situation so seeing and talking to a friendly person helps me back to reality. This packaged box was the only box that was small enough for this picture and letter. To give you more of an adventure into my vivid imagination sometimes, I sent these two books just to give an idea of century that I place my mind into when not battleing. I have read these already and I loved them. I am not saying YOU MUST READ THEM, you know what, yes I am, YOU MUST READ THEM, there I said it twice! Lol But for real, your thoughtfulness and appreciation is unmeasurable to anyone I have ever known.

Thank you Kristina, you will forever be in my heart, and the Soldiers that you make an impression on.

A few weeks ago I read this article over at A Little Pink In A World Of Camo. In the post, Mrs. P who is a Marine Widow talks about how she ran across another article that spoke not of a New Years Resolution, but of a New Years word, or theme. The basic idea is to reflect on what you really need in your life, or what you need to strive to give others. For example do you need Peace? Wisdom? Grace? Honesty? Tranquility? Or harmony? Do you need to be more generous? Humble? Compassionate towards others?

I have to say, I really like this idea. I think it has a lot of potential. One reason I like the idea of a New Years Theme is because it's positive and attainable. Sure, it's positive to cut sugar out of your diet, but how practical is it? It is realistic to have a goal for a year to be more compassionate. Does having a goal mean you'll be successful at every opportunity? No. All bad (and good) habits are born from repetition, meaning the more we do something, like practice compassion, the higher the possibility it will become easier and eventually mold into a habit.

I've given it a lot of thought, my New Years Theme is going to be Peace. Peace is something I have experienced little of in 2011. I'm not quite sure how one attains peace, as everyone seems to have a different answer, perhaps one day I'll have my own answer.

Does Mail and Care Packages Help Stop PTSD?

This article from the Chicago-Sun Times titled Hight-Tech Age Letters Still Matter discusses a study which shows family members who received hand written letters, emails they could print and keep with them, and care packages from family members were less likely to develop PTSD. This is the first study of it's type that I could find. I hope there are future studies in the works, and hope in the future they don't limit themselves to troops who regularly receive mail from family, but broaden the study to those who regularly receive mail. I have supported many troops, and I have several friends who support troops. Between all of us, I'd say we've supported THOUSANDS of troops with letters, care packages, and emails. Us active troop supporters know the value of what we send and do. I can only hope that word will spread and ALL of our troops overseas will feel the support of their country, because not every troop has a family to support them, but they do have a country filled with people who do.

How can you support a troop?

If you, or your child (children LOVE getting involved) draw a picture, write a letter, or make a card I will make sure it gets in the hands of a troop. Just email me or mail it directly to me at PO Box 734, Janesville, CA 96114. This is an AWESOME class project for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders who need to practice their letter writing skills.

If you would like to support a troop while they are deployed I suggest looking into being a Solider's Angel or visiting AnySoldier.com.

There are many amazing programs out there, these are but a few. I have made some life long friends and some I would even consider family, all by writing letters and sending care packages. Give it a try.

Christmas Operations Order

1. An official visit by LtGen Santa (NMI) Claus is expected at this headquarters 25 December. The following instructions will be in effect and govern the activities of all personnel during the visit.

A. Not a creature will stir without official permission. This will include indigenous mice. Special stirring permits for necessary administrative actions will be obtained through normal channels. Mice stirring permits will be obtained through the Office of the Surgeon General, Veterinary Services.

B. Personnel will settle their brains for a long winter nap prior to 2200 hours, 24 December. Uniform for the nap will be: Pajamas, cotton, light, drowsing, with kerchief, general purpose, camouflage; and Cap, camouflage w/ear flaps. Equipment will be drawn from Supply Officer prior to 1630 hours, 24 December.

C. Personnel will utilize standard field ration sugar plums for visions to dance through their heads. Artificially sweetened plums are authorized for those in their unit weight control program. Specifications for this item will be provided by the servicing dining facility.

D. Stockings, wool, cushion sole, will be hung by the chimney with care. Necessary safety precautions will be taken to avoid fire hazards caused by carelessly hung stockings. Unit safety Officers will submit stocking hanging plans to this headquarters prior to 0800 hours, 24 December, ATTN: S-4, for approval.

E. At the first sign of clatter from the lawn, all troops will spring from their racks to evaluate noise and cause. Immediate action will be taken to tear open the shutters and throw open the window sashes. S-3,OPS Plan (Saint Nick), Reference Enclosure No. 3, paragraph 6c, this headquarters, will be in effect to facilitate shutter tearing and sash throwing. NCO’s will familiarize all personnel with procedures and are responsible for ensuring that no shutters are torn open nor window sashes thrown open prior to start of official clatter.

F. Prior to 2400, 24 December, all personnel will be assigned "Wondering Eye" stations. After shutters are thrown open and sashes are torn, these stations will be manned.

G. The S-4 Officer will assign one each Sleigh, miniature, M-66, and eight (8) deer, rein, tiny, for use of LtGen Claus' driver who, IAW current directives and other applicable regulations, must have a valid SF 56 properly annotated by Driver Testing; be authorized rooftop parking and be able to shout "On Dasher, on Dancer, on Prancer and Vixen, up Comet, up Cupid, on Donner and Blitzen."

2. LtGen Claus will enter quarters through standard chimneys. All units without chimneys will draw Chimney Simulator, M-6, for use during ceremonies. Chimney simulator units will be requested on Engineer Job Order Request Form submitted to the Furniture Warehouse prior to 24 December and issued on DA Form 3161,Request for Issue or Turn-in.

3. Personnel will be rehearsed on shouting "Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night." This shout will be given on termination of General Claus' visit. Uniformity of shouting is the responsibility of NCO’s.

A Belated Thank You

Last year, Leslie and her family made extra Christmas cards to be sent off to our troops. I realize it's been a year since Leslie and her family sent the cards, but I never thanked them.... better late than never, right? I know Emily Post says I have up to one year to write my thank you's... whew I'm just in time.

Last week I had my sixth month dental appointment and cleaning. I see the same Dental Assistant every visit. This visit when I walked in, my Dental Assistant said to me, "Before I forget, you were the one who informed me on the needs of our Wounded Warriors and because of you, I donate to them every year. So thank you."

Just goes to show you, you never know who is listening, and how serious they will take you. A simple conversation about me participating in the annual Valour-IT fundraiser has turned into education and action for an otherwise uninformed civilian.

Who have you talked to lately? With the drawdown of Iraq, and thousands still in Afghanistan as well as other hostile Middle Eastern countries, it's not time to forget our men and women.

I have a lot of mixed feelings and questions about the Iraq drawdown. Over at War Retreat they have a post that shows information regarding Veterans who have served in Iraq, their families, and their lives now. There are even pie graphs for those who like pictures. Just remember, these are not just numbers, THESE ARE PEOPLE. People who have served multiple deployments, have PTSD, have lost a loved one to war, or a family that's lost a loved one to suicide. Check it out. Our Veterans and Active Duty need us, don't let them down.

UNBROKEN By Laura Hillenbrand ~ Book Review

When I originally bought Unbroken I had no idea what it was about. I supremely enjoyed Laura Hillenbrand's book Seabiscuit so I bought the book hoping I would enjoy it as much as I enjoyed her first book.

Unbroken showcases the life of Louis Zamperini. I'm ashamed to say I had no idea who Louis was, what his accomplishments were, or his story of survival before reading Unbroken. Unbroken is the type of survivor story that makes you think over and over again, How did he live through that? Hillenbrand sets the foundation for Louis strength in his resourceful childhood and family dynamics. Louis strength and determination help him achieve his goal of running in the 1936 Olympics as well as help him survive 47 days adrift at sea in an inflatable raft with two other survivors from his plane with no water, provisions, and sharks jumping into the inflatable raft in an attempt to eat the survivors. After surviving the impossible, Louis and his pilot Phil reach land, only to be captured as Japanese POW.

The Japanese did not consider any Allied forces as Prisoners Of War but instead unarmed combatants, therefore they did not adhere to the Geneva Convention regarding treatment of POWs. The treatment of POW's by the Japanese was cruel to say the least. They were tortured, beaten, starved, enslaved, and were the victims of medical experiments.

The hope, teamwork, and compassion the POW's felt for each other is exposed through Hillenbrand's words. The support and love of the Veterans for each other after their release is just as present. Louis post war life and battle with PTSD is explored as well as how he recovers.

This is an amazing must read book that should be on everyones shelves. Once I started reading, I was held in its grip until the very last page. Louis, Phil who was his pilot, and all of the other POW's stories are an amazing story of survival demonstrating the Unbroken American Spirit.

Can PTSD Affect Your Immune System?

I recently ran across the article PTSD Invokes Sex Different Immune Responses, which was a study done back in April of 2011. The basis of the study was to determine if Men and Women who have PTSD immune systems respond differently than people who do not have PTSD. Many studies have shown that PTSD physically affects the brain, so why not the immune system?

This article suggest that immune systems in women with PTSD are affected, where as men's immune systems are not affected. The study wasn't big enough for anything more than suggesting this to be true, more research needs to be done. However, being a woman with PTSD who has developed some serious immune problems since being diagnosed, well I think this study has some weight. I guess only time will tell.

As I have posted here before, I have been battling PTSD for 8 years. No, it’s not military related, as I’ve never served in the military. PTSD is not military exclusive it’s trauma exclusive.

Christmas Eve 2010 was the first day of this dreadfully long year of 2011. This year has throttled me with loss, death, betrayal, and lies in every aspect of my life. Most times I feel as if I’m drowning in Jell-O wishing someone would throw me some fruit to use as a floatation device. Having new triggers surface doesn’t do much for my sunny personality either. I know I’m irritable, easily agitated, and withdrawn. It doesn’t help that I’m constantly haunted, making the most mundane tasks difficult and frustrating. Of course, I can’t let anyone know how I really feel, I’m SUPER MOM amongst many other titles. I have responsibilities; I don’t have time for this. Living in a secluded area means help is as close as 2 hours away. Then there is the fact even doctors don’t know what to do with me, unless you count drugging me out of my gourd as a treatment plan.

Who am I? I am a natural disaster. Life as I knew it is over never to be the same. I am now tasked with building a new life from the rubble around me, a task that seems more than a little terrifying.

What has helped as I go through the rubble of my life deciding what pieces to keep and what pieces to throw away? Yoga. Don’t laugh. A reflection in Yoga The Iyengar Way by Silva, Mira and Shyan Metha says, “Emotions sway the mind from moment to moment, disturbing steadiness and peace. Yoga opens and stabilizes your center, making the mind strong, able to withstand emotional strains.” I have to agree, and I think the ladies over at War Retreat would agree as well. War Retreat is an organization, which helps local yoga groups help Veterans.

I just wanted to say thank you for your package that was received today.

Knowing that we are loved and supported is half the battle and reminds

I personally love going through pictures that kids have sent in. It
reminds me of my own children.
Unfortunately I don't have a whole lot of wall space to display them

Meet A Veteran Day Media Coverage

For those of you who don't know, I live in a uniquely small town. How small do you ask? Small enough the newspaper, The Lassen Times is published once a week. All stories have to be submitted Thursday by noon, and the paper is delivered the following Tuesday. Oh... and did I mention the newspaper is free? One might think with such a small paper the names, places, and basic facts of the stories are accurate.... well I'll just say we get what we pay for.

As is the case every year, Veterans Day is widely celebrated in the local paper. This year, Words For Warriors had two pictures from Meet A Veteran Day included in their collage of Veterans Day celebrations.

I know the writing is small under the photos in these pictures, but the paper gave the credit of Meet A Veteran Day to the Janesville Faculty. Janesville Faculty have gone out of their way to thank me for the assembly. I have also received much gratitude from Veterans. Even though the paper got it wrong... again... I feel honored to have put the assembly together and look forward to next years assembly.

Some teachers had their entire class participate, others offered extra credit, and some students had so much pride they created several pieces. The theme was "Patriotism." Meet A Veteran Day School Assembly

The goal of Meet A Veteran Day at Janesville School was to say Thank You For Your Service to our local Veterans and encourage direct communication between the students and the Veterans. I'm proud to announce the event was a success and here's what success looks like...

A Janesville Student Body Officer read a Never Forget message explaining the symbolism of the POW/MIA table.

Janesville Students listened to their questions being read by Student Officers then waited patiently for the Veterans answers.

Thanks to the Veterans who answered the students questions. Some were family members of Janesville Students.

Corporal Barron, fresh from Afghanistan brought some of his gear for the students to see and try on.

From the students I have had a chance to talk to, they loved hearing the answers the Veterans gave to their questions. One student's question directed to the Navy asked if they'd ever been swimming in the water and what kind of fish they saw. The answer was quite fascinating as the Navy man was in charge of retrieving a torpedo and just before he and his men got into the water the ship signaled there were SHARKS! Luckily, they retrieved the torpedo and no one was hurt.

I hope to make Meet A Veteran Day an annual event at Janesville School. I would like to thank Subway and Janesville Parent Teacher Organization for helping to sponsor the event. I would also like to say thank you to my friends, Sheri D., Tawyna M., Donna K., Shannon M., Delia B. Kanani, Amanda M., Janesville Student Body, and the Janesville Faculty. Meet A Veteran Day was a success because of all of you.

Meet A Veteran Day-Coming Together

For those of you who don't know, Words For Warriors is putting on an assembly at Janesville School on Thursday, November 10th called Meet A Veteran Day. We first announced it here. I am proud to say this event is coming together.

One of those friends I'd like to thank is Kanani from The Kitchen Dispatch . Kanani was nice enough to send Army Flair which will be given to the winners of the student art contest.

I would also like to send much gratitude to my friend and Blue Star Mom Sheri D. Sheri and her Mr. Subway own the local Subways and have thrown in 10 coupons for free sandwiches to sweeten the pot!

The Air Force Recruiter was out of the office today. The Army Recruiter was rushing out the door, and the Marine Recruiter gave me a cute smile.

But the NAVY recruiter.....

That's right there's so much you have to turn your head sideways.

There will be pictures, perhaps the local newspaper, and hopefully video to cover this 1st Annual Meet A Veteran Day. I'll keep you posted!

Ssgt Robert B. Cowdrey- Flight Medic and Angel

Ssgt Robert B. Cowdrey was serving his fourth deployment. He served as a Combat Medic with C Company "Dust Off" 3rd Battalion, 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade. Task Force Poseidon. He died in combat operations on October 13 in Afghanistan.

I can't find any words for this Soldier or his family. Only that he has been described as an angel who came from up above to help the wounded. I believe he is still an angel, up above, looking down on all those he loves, especially his wife Jill of 17 years and his three sons.

Chief Warrant Officer II U.S. Army, Richard "Dick" Muirhead

Perhaps some of you remember the post back in January called Mom You're Crazy. This is where I bought groceries for a talkative Vietnam Veteran who's name I never got. The mans name is Richard "Dick" Muirhead. He was born February 19th, 1947 in Albany N.Y. On September 14, 2011 he lost his battle with cancer.

When I met him that day in Safeway, he was all smiles telling my boys about flying Huey's. Turns out he's a decorated Vietnam Veteran who served a second tour in Vietnam because "his brothers were there." My children looked at Chief Warrant Officer II Dick Muirhead as if he wore a cape defending the less fortunate, and they were right to do so.

My boys and I attended Dick's funeral on Saturday, September 24th, 2011 as a member of the Patriot Guard Riders. Even though I joined the PGR over a year ago, I hadn't been able to attend a Memorial Service since becoming a member. Dick Myrhead's funeral was my first mission with my boys at my side. It was an experience I will never forget, as I will never forget Dick Muirhead.

May your family find peace as you've been reassigned to duty in heaven.

Meet A Veteran Day

Veterans Day is a little less than a month away, Words For Warriors is doing their part by holding Meet A Veteran Day at Janesville Union School on November 10th from 1:30 to 2:30 pm. This will be an event where select students will get to ask questions of Veterans from the various Wars. Words For Warriors is also supplying school curriculum for any teacher who would like it. The curriculum is from The History Channel event Take A Veteran To School Day.

The goal is to help educate students on who Veterans are, why they are important, and how to thank a Veteran. If anyone would like more information, please feel free to contact me. I am very excited about this major school event and will keep you all posted!

Captain Jack Randal's Rules For Raiding

While writing book reviews for the first two books in Phil Ward's Raiding Forces Series, which you can read here and here, Captain Jack Randal's Rules For Raiding have not only stuck with me, but I've been guilty of quoting them a time or two, so I thought I would share these rules with those who have not read Those Who Dare or Dead Eagles.

Randal's Rules For Raiding

Rule 1. The first rule is there ain't no rules.

Rule 2. Keep it short and simple.

Rule 3. It never hurts to cheat.

Rule 4. Right man, right job.

Rule 5.Plan missions backwards (know how to get home.)

Rule 6. It's good to have a Plan B.

Rule 7. Expect the unexpected.

Major Jack Randal Rules is displayed on the first page of Dead Eagles for those who need refreshing. It occurred to me while reading Dead Eagles, Major Randal's Rules apply to everyday life. Take Rule 1 I've found even when I played by the rules, not everyone else does. Whether it's trying to control a pack of sugar crazed children while substitute teaching on Halloween, or talking to your husband it's always better to keep it short and simple, hence Rule 2. Rule 3 Cheating in the books is more about taking whatever tool/weapon/person to tip the scales of advantage. In life I'd interpret it to mean use what tools you have to your advantage. Nepotism isn't always a bad thing. Discounts at a restaurant because you're good friends with the owner is nice too. Just remember to pay those favors back when you're able. Rule 4 Right man, right job. This is a rule I think every person in an authoritative position should have tattooed on their brain. If one is truly utilizing the right man (or woman), right job theory without thought about involving ego, well just imagine the possibilities...

Rule 5 Plan missions backwards (know how to get home) doesn't literally apply to the majority of the population of earth. However, if you take it on a theoretical basis Rule 5 could be interpreted as, never forget where you came from, how you got where you are, and why you're going in the direction you're heading. I found in life Rule 6 It's good to have a Plan B is an absolute must. In fact, if you add children into the factor I wouldn't stop at Plan B. More than once I've made it to Plan K. If you've spent much time around children this needs no explanation. Rule 7 Expect the unexpected ties into Rule 6 and also valuable in life. I have been waylaid by the unexpected in pretty much every aspect of my life at some point. Sometimes the unexpected is pleasant, other times it's not.

Gold Star Mother's Day

Gold Star Mother's Day is the last Sunday in September every year. I've been thinking about what to write for Gold Star Mother's Day for over a month. Why is this post late? Because of an unexpected three dog emergency that occurred early Sunday morning after my oldest sons 8th birthday camp out party. The true nature of an emergency means leaving with only what you have on your persons. Sadly my lap top was not on me at the time of the emergency for the three unexpected days I had to spend in Reno, which is in the next state and an hour and a half drive, hence a belated posting.

I have met a few Gold Star Mothers, and I still have no idea what to say to them. The thought of losing a child is so devastating that I can't bear to even think about it. So what does one say to a Mother who's lost a child? "Thank you for your sacrifice" not only seems inadequate, but also unsuitable. I personally don't know what my reaction would be if someone thanked me for the sacrifice of one of my children but I'm not sure it would be positive.

I was debating on the proper words to say to a Gold Star Mother beginning my long drive home with three alive, but still sick doggies when I saw this truck driving in front of me.

This Nevada registered truck also had a Gold Star Family license plate. If this truck would have pulled into a shopping center, I would have followed. I would have approached. I would have admitted I have no idea what to say to a Gold Star Family member, but that I wanted to express my heartfelt sympathy for the loss their son.

If you come across a Gold Star Family member I encourage you to say something. I've been told from one Gold Star Mother, if you speak from the heart you can't go wrong.

Dead Eagles is the second book by Phil Ward which will be released this November 2011. Major John Randal and his diverse team of covert operatives are back with more missions, more fire power, and more seemingly impossible assignments.

Dead Eagles is an exciting historical fiction page turner. It has the perfect balance of military humor, military strategy, and social economics facing the British in World War II. It is clear Phil Ward has brought his life experiences as a decorated Commissioned Combat Veteran and a former Army Ranger School Instructor through the many colorful characters placed in complicated, problematic, and unfavorable situations.

Dead Eagles is a delightful read and my favorite so far in the series. I'm looking forward to Phil Ward's next book in the series. You can read my review of the first in the series Those Who Dare here.

A US Army Medic Wounded Warrior

Sgt. Brian Christopher Jergens, from Oklahoma is 22 years old and his wife is 18 years old. They were married a month before Sgt. Jergens left for Afghanistan. Sgt. Jergens, a medic was one of three riding in a Humvee when it was struck by and IED, unfortunately he was the most severely injured. He lost both of he legs below the knee, his ring finger on his left hand, a broken arm, a cracked vertebra, abdominal injuries to the extent doctors removed his spleen. Doctors also had to control the swelling of his brain.

It was only just recently, in the end of August that Sgt. Jergens opened his eyes for the first time at the hospital in San Antonio, Texas to the joy of his wife, Jennifer. He hasn't been able to talk yet, but he is able to track objects with his eyes, and his wife says he is very aware of his surroundings.

Sgt. Jergens followed in his fathers foot steps of enlisting in the Army to be a medic. His father, Sargent Major Brian Keith Jergens has been temporarily assigned to a post near his son who was recovering in Texas until today. Sgt. Jergens was flown to California to continue his recovery at the Palo Alto VA today, September 19th. The Patriot Guard was on hand to support this wounded warrior and in welcoming him to California.

I wish I could have personally been able to meet Sgt. Jergens to welcome him to California, it would have been an honor. In fact it is an honor to have him and his wife in California. I hope and pray he has a full recovery.

Thanking A Vietnam Veteran

Today while standing in a decent sized line at the Pharmacy there were two gentlemen sitting in chairs waiting for their names to be called. One man was lifting his sleeves and pant legs showing off his ink. He pointed to his arm saying, "This is from when I was in the service." Then proceeded to list off a division, and a unit I didn't quite catch. The other man asked, "Vietnam?" The man said yes, quickly moving on to the next tattoo.

Soon my name was called, I had my items, and as I walked past I stopped in front of the Vietnam Veteran and said, "Thank you for your service." He said, "What?" I smiled, "I over heard your conversation, Thank you for serving our country." The man's face turned hard, his gaze steely. I continued to smile, "I truly appreaciate all you've done for me and my family by serving in the military." The mans face softened a little, he gave me a slight head nod and a slit of a smile, "You're very welcome."

I thank people for their service all the time, this man is the first Veteran to look at me sternly, questioningly, defensively. It makes me wonder if I'm the first person to sincerely thank him for his service and sacrifices.

Constitution Week 2011

About 224 years ago a group of traitorous rebels gathered, wrote, signed, and agreed to the Constitution of The United States of America. Or was it a crowd of oppressed farmers who fought for their freedom from an intolerable monarchy?

Regardless of your view point, the Constitution of the United States was ratified and has been held up as the supreme law of the land for more than 200 years. In President Obama's official proclamation announcing September 17th as Constitution Day and Citizenship Day as well as the week starting September 17th through September 23 National Constitution Week he states,

"Americans are defined not by bloodlines or allegiance to any one leader or faith, but by our shared ideals of liberty, equality, and justice under the law."

Americans should be vigilant in remembering what our forefathers risked and lost in order to fight for ideas of liberty, equality, and justice. Americans need to bear in mind the ideas our nation was founded on are under constant attack and it is up to us, Americans to fight for liberty, equality, and justice.

Today America is in a precarious place with economic decay, unemployment soaring, and ten years of war weighing us down, circumstances which bond us with our forefathers who signed the Constitution. If you haven't read The Constitution of the United States recently, I encourage you to do so.

POW/MIA National Recognition Day- Never Forget

According to the Defense Prisoner of War/Missing Personnel Office (DPMO) statistics, which where updated as of the writing of this post: 73,787 men are still missing from World War II, there are 7,985 service members unaccounted for from Korea, and 1,682 men are waiting to come home from Vietnam. (Some remains have been recovered and are under going DNA testing for identification.) There were 49 service members listed as POW/MIA during Desert Storm, all 49 souls have been accounted for, the last man was laid to rest in 2009. The DPMO collaborates with several government agencies and countries in Asia to locate and confirm the remains of warriors spanning past conflicts and wars.

Every 3rd Friday of September is POW/MIA Recognition Day in the United States of America, how many citizens know this? How many children in school are taught to remember those who've yet to make it home? How many cities and towns hold POW/MIA ceremonies of some kind? Or even fly a POW/MIA flag? Why should Americans, who've been at War for ten years care about those past Soldiers, Marines, Sailors, and Airmen who have been missing and could dead after all this time?

Why?

Because the motto "Leave No Man Behind" is not a hallow phrase spoken flippantly. There are families and loved ones of 83,454 warriors who are waiting for closure and peace of mind. That means there are thousands of Fathers, Mothers, Brothers, Sisters, Sons, Daughters, and Grandchildren who are waiting for word of their loved ones fate. They are plagued with questions....

What if they are still alive?
What happened to them?
If they are dead, how did they die?
Will they ever be found?
Will I ever be at peace?

The Warriors who have yet to make it home deserve Honor, Respect, and Remembrance of a nation they fought and served. The remains of 29 men have been identified and laid to rest in 2011 according to the DPMO. If you would like to read the names and in some cases learn a little about the men please click here.

How can you honor those still missing? You can fly a POW/MIA flag tomorrow, Friday September 16th. If you discover a government building not flying the flag, you can kindly remind them flying the POW/MIA flag has been written into law. You can have copies of the poster (per the DPMO website that offers the posters, for free) and display them in your home, office, or apartment building as a reminder to all Americans. The 10th Anniversary Of The 9/11 Attacks

I realized today that my children, who are about to turn 6 and 8 years old have never lived in peace time America. This broke my heart just a little. What else brakes my heart? Every time I'm introduced to a Gold Star family member. If anyone knows adequate words to say to someone who's lost a child, a spouse, a sibling, or a parent please let me know. Saying I'm sorry for your loss seems completely deficient.

But I digress....

Ten years have passed. Ten years of War. We've had two presidents. Gas prices have gone from approximately $1.50 per gallon to $3.89 per gallon where I live. The government developed new agencies like Homeland Security, and the TSA to supposably keep us safe from future terrorist attacks. There are fewer and fewer signs of patriotism in everyday life as civilians without military connections grow weary. I fear such apathy will develop into only vowing to never forget once a year, instead of being diligent about remembering the lives lost on that September day, and every day since. When I say remember and never forget I don't just mean American lives, American's were not the only passengers on those planes or in the WTC. See a previous post Never Forget. Thousands of Coalition lives have been lost in the last ten years as well.

I asked one of my friends who has been on multiple deployments and lost friends what September 11th meant to him. He said, "It shows the myth is busted. America is not invulnerable. We need to always be vigilant."

Honoring Sgt Chad Frokjer

Sgt Chad Frokjer a Minnesota resident was killed in action by an explosive devise on June 30th 2011 in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. He was an experienced Marine on this third deployment. He served with the 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, based at Camp Pendleton. Governor Jerry Brown of California and Governor Mark Dayton of Minnesota ordered all State Flags and American Flags flown at half mast in Sgt. Frokjer's honor on July 9, 2011.

Like so many Marines, Sgt Froker found out he and his wife were expecting a son, Eli their first child while he was deployed. Eli will now learn about his father from his fathers Marine brothers, sisters, and family as they will not meet in this life. Eli is expected to arrive sometime this month.

My fellow blogger Glory, Guts, and Glitter attended High School with Sgt. Frokjer. It is very difficult for her to write about Chad, but she has made two attempts. In her post Update Shmupdate
she mentions the loss of Sgt Frokjer and her personal way of honoring his memory and family. On August 11th she honors Sgt Frokjer on his 28th birthday. Here is an excerpt.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I began making bracelets to help raise money for his wife Leslie (whom I've never met) and their unborn son Eli. But I see this as more than a fundraiser. I remember a Sesame Street book my mother read to me as a child. Bert was having a hard time remembering to do something, so he tied a string around his finger to help him not forget. To me, these bracelets are that string around Bert's finger. I'll never forget the last message I received from Chad on Facebook, jokingly telling me I was stupid for trying to get back into the Marine Corps. (Many Marines tend to have a love/hate relationship with the Corps. It's a tough job with a lot of bullshit at times, but I don't know any Marine who would trade in their years of service for something else. Chad loved what he did.) Not only are these bracelets a reminder of the sacrifice Sgt Frokjer made for us, but a reminder of all who gave their lives for our country.

For those faithful readers of my blog, you know I honor the fallen every chance I get. I have given a donation to the family and have received a large number of bracelets. My plan is to hand them out as thank you for donations of postage, supplies, and for the children who draw pictures, and write letters for me to send off. I have also promised I will share with every recipient of a bracelet Sgt Chad Frokjer's story. His memory will always live on.

Those Who Dare by Phil Ward~ A Book Review

Those Who Dare is a historical World War II work of fiction and the first in the Raiding Forces novels, which follows the career of a former American U.S. Army officer by the name of John Randal. John Randal who volunteers for the British Army Kings Royal Rifle Corps starts his memorable career as the Lieutenant in charge of buying trapped Allied troops at Dunkirk time to evacuate. Completely out numbered Randal uses gorilla warfare at Calais, France trading “time for space.”

Randal is a charismatic character who has the ability to take bored, leaderless men transforming them into an elite fighting force. Randal not only wins the hearts and minds of his men, who are all volunteers, but his superior officers too.

After Calais he is charged with creating a superior fast striking small raiding fighting force. The various training, equipment logistics, and mission debacles that ensue are classic examples of how plan Alpha never works out. It was interesting to watch Randal work through the same problems Victor Krulak worked through with the problems of amphibious landings during the same time frame.

Phil Ward has pulled together a variety of believable characters in historical battles and events making an exciting new perspective which allows us to look at a time frame that is sadly being forgotten in light of a decade of recent war.

I AM YOUR FLAG

As I mentioned in a previous post, shortly after hearing of the tragedy of the helicopter in Afghanistan which took 30 American lives the majority of which were Navy SEAL's, I was in attendance at a Cub Scout Camp Out with my two sons.

The Cub Scout along with several of the fathers in attendance were Veteran's. The Flag Retirement Ceremony is always emotional, but with the added deaths it seemed heavier. The Cub Master read the following poem, which to me seemed to go beyond Our Flag speaking to us, but the Fallen Men and Women of our Country speaking to us. I felt as if every person who had ever fought for Our Flag was speaking the words.

With permission I have the Cub Scout I AM YOUR FLAG poem that was read at our ceremony.

“I am your Flag. I appear in many places. I have taken many forms and been called many names. I was authorized by Congress in 1818 in the form you see now and have remained unchanged except to add a new star each July 4^th after a new State joined the Union until I reached my present number of 50.”

“I am more than just red, white, and blue cloth shaped into a design. I am a silent sentinel of freedom. People of every country in the world know me on sight. Many countries love me as you do. Other countries look at me with contempt because they don’t allow the freedom of Democracy that I represent – but they do look on me with respect. I am strong and the people of America have made me strong. My strength comes from your willingness to give help to those who are in need. You strive for world peace, yet stand ready to fight oppression. You send resources and offer technology to less fortunate countries so they may strive to become self-sufficient. You feed starving children. You offer a home to anyone who will pledge allegiance to America. “

“Your sons gather beneath me to offer their lives on the battlefields, to preserve the Liberty I represent. That’s why I love the American people. That’s why I have flown so proudly.”

“Scouts and their families are some of my favorite people. I listen to your patriotic songs. I’m there at your flag ceremonies and I appreciate the tender care you give me. I feel the love when you say your pledge. I notice that your hand covers your heart when I am on parade. How smartly you salute as I pass by and I ripple with pleasure when I see it. I have had the great Honor of being your flag of the United States of America.”

“But now I am tired and it’s time for me to rest in the Sacred Flames of your campfire. My colors are faded and my cloth is tattered but my spirit remains unbroken.”

“As you watch me burn, do not be sad or feel sorry for me. I will be back the next time you need me, and my colors will be fresh and bright and my edges won’t be ragged anymore. Next time when I climb to the top of the flagpole I’ll wave at you and remember the love and respect that you have showed me here tonight.”

Gratitude

I always assumed my best friend's husband tolerated me. After my best friend came back from vacation with her family I received this note from her husband.

Kris, you inspired me to do something while on vacation. While having breakfast one morning I noticed an older man and his wife sitting there. He was wearing an "army - retired" hat with unit pin and purple heart pin, obviously seen action. So I went up to him and thanked him for his service. He turned his hat around and showed me the POW pin. 3 years as a Korean war POW. It was incredible. So thank you Kris for helping me meet this man.

This is the sort of interaction I have every chance I get when I see anyone in a uniform, Veteran's Hat, Unit shirt, or Blue Star insignia. Knowing I've inspired others to follow my example and share the gratitude every American should feel for those who serve gives me a sense of accomplishment.

The Chinook Tragedy In Afghanistan

I was at a Cub Scout Camp with my boys when I found out about the death of the 30 men on the Chinook. I shared the sad information with the Cub Master, a Veteran. At the camp fire, a Flag was retired. Before it was placed in the fire the Cub Master read a variation of the poem I Am The Flag. He included the lost and their families into the ceremony. The Flag retirement ceremony seemed like a fitting memorial for the service members who had died fighting for the Flag. The ceremony was emotional for several of us around the camp fire. Once home I contacted my friends who knew a few of the deceased and offered my compassion for their loss. I shared with them the experience of the Flag ceremony as a memorial. I have been given permission to post part of their response to their friends sacrifices.

Don't cry for any lost, though. Know that all (well, most of us) join these communities with the full knowledge and acceptance of the possible outcome. Many of us would rather die doing something to help others than as old people in our beds. Don't cry or mourn...celebrate and be grateful and love them and their familiies for what they did.

I have experienced my share of death in this life, it is the living I feel for, because learning to live without a loved one can be like learning to breathe underwater. It seems impossible at first. I hope the families of the fallen from this crash, as well as the families of the fallen over the last 10 years from Iraq and Afghanistan feel the love and support of American's everywhere. As my other friend put it:

Its okay to cry and mourn, but what i like to do is think about the good times that you had with them and the smiles that you shared. I knew some of the guys that went down in the Chinook and finding out about their names this morning, I was hurt at first, mad the next second, and then realized that theres nothing I can do about it now. We spent the rest of the day laughing remembering funny things those guys had done and said. Laugh, smile and remember the good times.

The men who died are more than a number on a tragic day. They are sons, fathers, brothers, husbands, uncles, and friends. I wanted to take my friends advice and write a post that celebrated their lives, only I didn't have the honor to know any of them. Then I found this article by Stars and Stripes which celebrates the lives of each one of the men through the eyes of those who loved them. I highly recommend you read and honor the lives and the families of the men who died in the crash.

Remember Their Sacrifice. Our Freedom.

The Pledge Of Allegiance

I am a substitute teacher. I have every class I'm teaching say the Pledge of Allegiance. I can also say, EVERY teacher's class I've visited has their class say it too. This makes me proud and I hope it continues.

There has only been one instance where a boy didn't stand or take off his hat. The other children in the class took it upon themselves to tell this boy to stop disrespecting OUR Country and the people who fight for OUR Flag. I told the class the boy had the right not to stand or take his hat off. The entire class gave the boy a look that said if he didn't respect the Pledge of Allegiance the other kids would take the issue up again at recess. The boy stood taking of his hat. He said every word. I think this particular kid was just trying to give me a hard time because I was a substitute, not because he had any one particular belief.

In the future I will carry a copy of this cartoon with me when I teach. I think it's important for the children to know they are not really disrespecting me when they refuse to say the Pledge of Allegiance as the cartoon below shows.

Glamourous Military Pay

This is an Airman's response to Cindy Williams' editorial piece in the Washington Times about MILITARY PAY, it should be printed in all newspapers across America .

Ms. Cindy William wrote a piece for the Washington Times denouncing the pay raise(s) coming service members' way this year citing that she stated a 13% wage increase was more than they deserve.

article below. He ought to get a bonus for this.

"Ms Williams:

I just had the pleasure of reading your column, "Our GI's earn enough" and I am a bit confused. Frankly, I'm wondering where this vaunted overpayment is going, because as far as I can tell, it disappears every month between DFAS (The Defense Finance and Accounting Service) and my bank account. Checking my latest earnings statement I see that I make $1,117.80 before taxes per month. After taxes, I take home $874.20. When I run that through the calculator, I come up with an annual salary of $13,413.60 before taxes, and $10,490.40 after.

I work in the Air Force Network Control Center where I am part of the team responsible for a 5,000 host computer network. I am involved with infrastructure segments, specifically with Cisco Systems equipment. A quick check under jobs for "Network Technicians" in the Washington , D.C. area reveals a position in my career field,

requiring three years^T experience in my job. Amazingly, this job does NOT pay $13,413.60 a year. No, this job is being offered at $70,000 to $80,000 per annum............ I'm sure you can draw the obvious conclusions.

Given the tenor of your column, I would assume that you NEVER had the pleasure of serving your country in her armed forces.

Before you take it upon yourself to once more castigate congressional and DOD leadership for attempting to get the families in the military's lowest pay brackets off of WIC and food stamps, I suggest that you join a group of deploying soldiers headed for AFGHANISTAN ; I leave the choice of service branch up to you. Whatever choice you make though, opt for the SIX month rotation: it will guarantee you the longest possible time away from your family and friends, thus giving you full "deployment experience."

As your group prepares to board the plane, make sure to note the spouses and

children who are saying good-bye to their loved ones. Also take care to note that several families are still unsure of how they'll be able to make ends meet while the primary breadwinner is gone. Obviously they've been squandering the "vast" piles of cash the government has been giving them.

Try to deploy over a major holiday; Christmas and Thanksgiving are perennial favorites.. Talk to your loved ones as often as you are permitted; it won't be nearly long enough or often enough, but take what you can get and be thankful for it. You may have picked up on

Remembering One of Our Own Lcpl Tyler A. Roads

Today marks the one year anniversary of Lance Corporal Tyler A. Roads death in Afghanistan. I can't even imagine the emotional roller coaster his family is riding today, and everyday since his death. I didn't have the pleasure of meeting Tyler, but have met several people who loved him. Sonia, Tyler's mother has shared much of her son's childhood, hopes, and dreams with me. If you haven't read the previous posts about Tyler please click here.

Kayleigh, who grew up with Tyler and his sister Taylor was nice enough to share her favorite memory. Kayleigh remembers when she was 10 or 12 spending most of the summer at their house. They had a scooter and a big hill near the house to ride the scooter down. As any parent knows, a scooter mixed with a big hill and gravity is a sure bet that someone is going to get hurt. In this case it was Kayleigh who accidentally used the front brake instead of the back break, making her flip over the handle bars.

"I remember getting road rash pretty bad. Tyler helped me back to the house and I got all bandaged up. He was so kind and willing to help even though his sister and I had been terrorizing him all summer. The theme of him helping people always rang true throughout his life. He is greatly missed by all, as all who knew him loved him."

There is a Facebook page in memory of Tyler which is maintained by his mother. I would like to invite everyone to leave Sonia a message either here in the comments or on Facebook letting her know she is in our hearts and prayers today, and everyday as she deals with her greatest lost. Independence Day, or the Fourth of July is a celebration and remembrance of the American rebels who were courageous enough to stand up and fight for what they believed in. Because of those brave volunteers who risked everything, including their lives to fight for Liberty, we have the America we know today.

Today, we Americans still have volunteers fighting for and protecting Liberty around the globe. These American's join the Army, Marines, Navy, and the Air Force. Liberty has a high price, of blood to maintain.

In Remembrance and Honor of all the men and women who have paid the ultimate price for Liberty in the last 235 years every American should take a few minutes to read the Declaration of Independence. You can read it in it's full original text here.

I would also like to take a moment to Honor The Fallen on this day.
SPC Kevin J. Hilaman, was killed in action on June 26th, 2011 in Kunar province, Afghanistan. He was 28 years old from North Highlands Sacramento. SPC Kevin J. Hilama was killed during a battle with enemy forces who attacked his unit with small arms fire. SPC Hilaman joined the Army in March 2003 as an infantryman serving honorably in three overseas deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan.

SPC Hilaman served with the 2nd Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, based in Hawaii. His awards and decorations include Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf clusters. Army Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War On Terrorism Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, and NATO Medal.

SPC Hilaman will be receiving a heros welcome home on Tuesday, July 6th at 10:00 am at 308 Peacekeeper Way, Mc Clellan Air Force Base (MCC), North Highlands, Ca 95652. If you live in the area and would like to honor SPC Hilaman and his family the Patriot Guard Riders are an excellent, patriotic accepting bunch of people who I suggest you get in touch with.

Welcome Home SPC Hilaman. Thank you for your service and your courage. May you and your family find peace.

A Moment Of Silence

It has come to my attention that heaven is admitting a Sailor and a Soldier, both from Susanville California who fought in World War II. American is quickly loosing the brave men and women who served in World War II along with their experiences and memories of war and lost comrades. I ask you to take a moment to Honor, Respect, and Remember the lives of two men who fought for our freedom.

Burton John Crouse Sr. joined the U.S. Navy in 1942. He served as a Machinist Mate for three years until he was discharged. During those three years his service was recognized as he received the WWII Victory Medal and the 6 Star Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal. He was 89 years young on his passing.

Burton moved to Susanville, California at a young age, where he graduated from Lassen High School. He returned to Susanville after his service and married Wilda Logan-Wilson. Burton and Wilda spent more than 60 years together until her passing in 2007. Burton is survived by two daughters, a sister, four grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

Services to honor Burton will be held Saturday, June 18th at 1100 hours at Diamond Crest Cemetery in Susanville.

Toy E. McCracken joined the Army in 1942 serving honorably in World War II. He fought in the Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central European Campaigns. Toy received the Bronze Star three separate times along with the Good Conduct Medal. He was discharged from the Army in 1946. Toy and his family moved to Susanville, California where he continued to serve in the National Guard.

Toy was 90 years young upon his passing, and spent 58 years with his wife Fayenila Spencer until her death in 1999. Toy is survived by his son, two grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and three sisters. Toy's son, Terry says his father never spoke of his service. Toy's family says he, "Had a love for tinkering with cars, tractors, and growing gardens."

Services to honor Toy will be held Saturday, June 18th at 1000 hours at Diamond Crest Cemetery, Susanville.

Memorial comes from the latin word memorialis meaning serving as a reminder. The definition of Memorial is a structure or event established to commemorate a person or an incident. Memorial Day is a day to remember those who gave their lives for our country. Every person who enjoys the freedoms America has to offer should be grateful to those who fight, have fought, and have lost their lives protecting America.

Why is Memorial Day important?

Memorial Day is a national day of remembrance. A day to honor, grieve, and share the memories of those who have fallen. When I asked an active duty Marine what Memorial Day meant to him, he told me it is deeply meaningful for him. He remembers the service of his Great-grandfather as well as his fallen brothers in his Marine family.

I think my friend who is a retired Sailor said it best when he said, "Freedom isn't Free, because Freedom is never paid for... it is only rented." Men, women, and their families have been paying the rent of freedom on our behalf for years. Memorial Day is the day we say thank you by honoring their sacrifice.

How can the average citizen show gratitude on Memorial Day?

Fly the American Flag proudly at half mast from dawn until noon. Go to a local Memorial Day Parade and ceremony at the cemetery. Visit a local monument. (If my small practically nonexistent town has monuments I'm sure yours does too.... check it out.) The Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Girl Scouts preform flag placement in the cemeteries in my area, they always need help and it's a great way to get children involved in a positive way. I have found flag placement in cemeteries to be fulfilling as young children take pride not only in their flag, but in those who died fighting for it.

None of the above activities takes a full day, so there is still plenty of time for that family BBQ or run up to the lake. My point? There is no excuse for not paying proper respects and honoring the fallen of this great country.

Remembering The Dogs Of War

Dogs have been man’s best friend for hundreds of years. They have played the role of protector, defender, hunting companion, and family member. Since dogs are intelligent, they are perfect partners for helping mankind in a variety of ways. A dog’s sense of smell is renowned; in fact it is so remarkable Japanese researchers are currently conducting a potentially life saving study where dogs diagnose cancer in humans. Dog’s brains and noses are clearly built for pursuing, tracking, and stalking prey. Whether the pray is a rabbit, a pheasant, a missing person, a German in World War II, narcotics, or explosive components, dogs are the perfect weapon to accomplish the mission.

The single minded focus dogs demonstrate while stalking, combined with their unfaltering loyalty make them ideal partners with militaries around the world. Since 2005 bomb or IED sniffing dogs have increased exponentially in Afghanistan. Currently the United States, Australia, Canada, and Great Britain all use dogs to detect IED’s in Afghanistan. The importance of the “Sniffer dogs” mission, to save lives, fused with the troops ability to bond with the dogs is evident by the presence of several veterinary clinics to ensure the Sniffer dogs health.

Sniffer dogs wounded in action have been treated as true brothers and sisters in the military family. Canine units have been given the same priority as injured NATO troops. In cases of extreme emergencies the dogs have been medivac to the Role 3 Multinational Medical Unit (MMU) where dogs have received life saving major surgery. The MMU surgeons have agreed to treat the dogs when certain surgeries are too complex for the small veterinary clinics.

When a Sniffer dog is killed in action, he is mourned like a true brother. After an in theater memorial service, the sniffer dog is received back to it’s country with honors. If the dog’s handler is also killed in action, the two are buried together. Staying true to “Never Forget” the Afghanistan War Dog Memorial Project has been established. Mahor Donna DeBonis, who served as a Veterinary Officer at Kandahar Airfield in the Summer of 2009 founded the Afghanistan War Dog Memorial. The current mission as stated on facebook is, “To create and build a War Dog Memorial lodged at Kandahar Air Field by September 11 to pay tribute to the War Dog Lives lost in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom. The Memorial was built for the dedication ceremony OCT 2009. It is maintained by the US Army Veterinary staff on duty at KAF.” The plaques for the memorial were donated by Cheryl Musket of the AMEDD Museum at Ft. Sam Houston. Albert Staniforth, a Canadian Civilian Contractor and SGT Wes Stewart contributed their labor to the effort.

Some might wonder, Is it necessary to have a war dog memorial? A British paper reports that Sniffer dogs and their handlers are HVT or High Value Targets. The Taliban are seeking out these teams with focused snipers since they have been impacting the efficiency of Taliban IED’s. With the approach of Memorial Day, I ask you to extend your thoughts, prayers, and thanks to honor the brave IED Sniffer dogs that have lost their lives saving our children and Afghan children from IED’s.

I was at the Milblog Conference on April 29th and 30th where I met The Sniper as well as a number of other bloggers on my Blog roll. I was so excited I forgot to get photographic proof of the others. Reflections on the Death of bin Laden

Osama bin Laden is dead. After 10 years of war, I had given up hope that we would hear those words. However, tonight those words were spoken to the American people, our allies across the world, and most importantly - our enemies.

September 11, 2001 changed my life forever. If not for that dark event on a bright September day I would have never joined the United States Marine Corps in December 2001. My entire adult life has been in the service of my country because of one man's plan to destroy my country and my way of life.

I sat this evening watching Fox News. The talking heads spouted off the facts of the last 10 years' search. The ticker repeated the same information for over an hour and a half. We all waited for the confirmation of the leaks and reports. And then the words were spoken. "Good evening. Tonight I can report to the American people and the world that the United States has conducted an operation that has killed Osama bin Laden, the leader of Al-Qaeda and a terrorist who's responsible for the murder of thousands of innocent men, women, and children."

My reaction at the words was a solid fist pump into the air. It wasn't just a rumor as we'd heard so many times over so many years. We have DNA confirmation. We have the body. He is dead.

The question for many of us now is, "What do we do now?" The man ultimately responsible for the deaths of over three thousand Americans is dead, but terror is not. There will be those that work towards the same goals as Osama bin Laden. Men will step forward to become the new leader of Al-Qaeda and make every effort to extract revenge upon the United States of America for the death of Osama bin Laden. I have but one warning to give. No matter how long it takes, no matter where you hide, you will meet the same fate.

A Call To Action For Our Wounded

Below is a letter I have distributed to all the local schools in my area, then it occurred to me I should post this letter so others could be involved. I am traveling for the first time to Washington D.C. to attend the Milblog conference, after I will visit and see as much as I can in the area, including Walter Reed. I am asking for your help to show support to those who need it, to those who deserve to be thanked for their service, so they may know American's are grateful.

Please share, email, facebook, tweet to help get Words to Our Warriors of love, support, and encouragement.

Words For Warriors whose mission statement is to encourage and fortify relationships between military service members, veterans, their families, their friends, and their Country; to nurture the path of communication for everyone, ensuring that no one is alone or left behind; and proving that we have not, are not, and will never forget the nobility of their sacrifices is going to visit the wounded in Washington D.C. the first week of May.

Why am I contacting you? Because the healing words, drawings, and poems from children is some of the most therapeutic, giving hope to those who are struggling. Words For Warriors is asking for teachers to take the time to have their classes make Get Well or Thank You cards, pictures, letters, or poems to be personally handed to the wounded at Walter Reed. A Dutch Officer Helps a Paraplegic Afghan Child

Dutch officer works to improve disabled Afghan's quality of life

KABUL - NATO troops walking in the Green Zone-area of Kabul between Camp Eggers and International Security Assistance Force Headquarters have become accustomed to speaking with and waving to locals in the area.

Many of the local children are eager to speak English, which they learn in school. While others also volunteer to escort troops between the compounds and walk side-by-side with their NATO friends.

One young man who stands out to many walking between the camps is Hamed Ghafoor.

Hamed is disabled and doesn't have use of his legs. He lays on a small, three-wheel cart, which sits about six inches off the ground with his legs folded under his chest and pushes himself around using his hands.

One Dutch officer saw this and looked to himself and his home country to see how he could make a change.

"Kabul is not a city where it's easy to get about, especially the way Hamed has been doing with his little cart," said Netherlands Army Maj. Edwin Kok, who is assigned to NATO Training Mission-Afghanistan as a strategic planner. "I felt sorry for him moving around on his little cart. Using his hand with a shoe on it to propel his body cannot be good for his body."

Honoring SPC Rudolph R Hizon- Project Honor

Rudolph R Hizon joined the Army in January 2009 and deployed to Afghanistan in October 2010.

U.S. Army SPC Rudolph R. Hizon was assigned to Task Force Patriot soldiers from 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division. Hizon, a 22-year-old Los Angeles native assigned to Company B, 2nd Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment’s Task Force Storm out of Fort Polk, LA

U.S. Army Spc. Kevin Jones of Aurora, Ill., assigned to Company B’s TF Storm, said he will always remember Hizon’s smile.

“I will always have you in my thoughts for the rest of my days,” said Jones of Hizon. “I love you man!”

Hizon was a good friend to everyone he knew, said U.S. Army Spc. Joshua Gonzales of Olath, Kan.

“I will always think of him as the happy and cheerful person he was… and I’m going to miss him dearly,” said Gonzales. “I love you, fool.”

U.S. Army Pfc. Clayton Contrall of Piedmont, Ala., also with Company B, said Hizon always had a “huge smile” on his face – the kind of smile that made everyone around him smile, too.

“You’re a warrior and will always be in my heart,” said Contrall. “Love you fool!”

“Fool” is a term of endearment used among some of the soldiers.

Hizon’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghan Campaign Medal with star device, Global War on Terror Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, NATO Medal and Combat Infantryman Badge.

Baking For The Troops- Success

Last Wednesday, March 9th was the first gathering of Baking For The Troops. Nicole S. (whose husband is a Veteran) was nice enough to welcome us into her home. There were a few challenges, like a power surge braking Nicole's electric oven. It took more than one batch of cookies for us to realize it was baking at three times the required heat. Then the oven wouldn't turn off, until unplugged from the wall.

We would not be stopped. In true Military style we adapted and over came. I took all of the cookie dough to my house to bake and package the cookies. There are chocolate oatmeal, and good old fashioned chocolate chip cookies which are wrapped two to a package. There are approximately 100 packages or 200 cookies being mailed to some hungry military personal.

The cookies are being accompanied by letters written by Janesville Union Students, as if homemade cookies weren't enough. Here are a few pictures of the cookies being cooked. Enjoy!

Lance Corporal Stephen McKee

Lance Corporal McKee, aged 27, came from Banbridge in County Down, Northern Ireland. In 2003 he joined 3rd Battalion, The Royal Irish Regiment as a part-time soldier. When the Home Service were disbanded he decided to transfer to 1st Battalion, The Royal Irish Regiment and he joined them at Tern Hill, Shropshire, in April 2007.

Lance Corporal McKee was posted to B Company, where he served with distinction for 3 years before moving to the Machine Gun Platoon in D Company in 2010. He first deployed on Op HERRICK 8 in March 2008 and was quickly recognised as a fine soldier, trustworthy and courageous.

Lance Corporal McKee always had time for everyone. He was a family-man and showed enormous strength, particularly during a very difficult time last year when his two-day-old daughter passed away. Lance Corporal McKee had strong family connections with the regiment, with two brothers, a cousin and his father-in-law all serving in the First Battalion, and with another brother serving in the Second Battalion.

Lance Corporal McKee's loss is profound. It has affected this Battalion and the wider Regimental family most deeply. He leaves behind his wife Carley, his parents Heather and Bobby, his brothers Michael, Gareth and Robert, and his sisters Kelly and Rebecca, our thoughts are with them all at this sad time.

The wife of Lance Corporal McKee, Carley McKee, said:

"You will always be my hero and every step I take in life, I will have my two angels looking after me. You truly are the best husband, father, son and brother anyone could ask for. Till we meet again. Love you always."

Lieutenant Colonel Colin Weir, Commanding Officer, 1st Battalion The Royal Irish Regiment, said:

"The death of Lance Corporal Stephen McKee has sent a wave of shock and sadness through this Battlegroup. Everyone knows the McKees. Everyone respects the McKees. The McKees are in the First Battalion and the McKees are in the Second Battalion.

"It is families like the McKees that make this Regiment what it is; they are the fibre that runs through us and what gives us our fighting spirit. It is because of families like the McKees that we are the winners in this fight.
"Stephen McKee was the finest of men; he was irrepressible, he was utterly reliable and he was a fearsome warrior. As part of the Operations Company he fought the long battle to drive the enemy out of the Nad-e'Ali Canal zone and into the desert.

"And it was into the desert that Stephen and his comrades followed, in pursuit of the enemy. When he died, he was attacking the insurgent in his bases there, harassing him, capturing his weapons and destroying his explosives.
"Not only was he the finest of Irish soldiers, he was a man with great depths of resilience. I had the privilege of spending a little while with him and his wife Carley after their baby daughter passed away unexpectedly last year.

"His parents and his brothers and sisters had closed around the grieving couple. Their strength and the unshakeable of bonds of this wonderful family were truly humbling. Please God be with them all now. Faugh A Ballagh."

Major Gregory Murphy, Officer Commanding D Company, 1st Battalion The Royal Irish Regiment, said:

"The death of Lance Corporal Stephen McKee comes as a most profound loss. Rarely would you find someone as conscientious, generous, hard working and as professional as Stephen. I remember my first meeting with him on Salisbury Plain when he was commanding the opposing force on my Company exercise.

"The first thing that struck me was his disarming smile, the second that unflaggingly positive character of his. Regardless of his own discomfort or the adverse conditions crippling those around him, there would be Stephen with that bloody grin of his. He was a popular and endeared leader within the Company and whilst he was easy to like, he was a man that was even easier to respect.

"Lance Corporal McKee joined Machine Gun Platoon in early 2010 but has always been closely linked with the Regimental Bugles, Pipes and Drums. He was destined for greater things and had just completed his Machine Gun Section Commanders Course before deploying to Afghanistan at the end of January 2011.

"After rejoining the Company he pushed himself immediately to the front and that is where he continued to lead from. He was employed as a Patrol second-in-command and had already taken part in numerous air assault operations. On the day of his death he was taking part in a cordon and search of a small Kalay (village).

"He was determined to do the best he could, to stand shoulder to shoulder with his mates and to serve his country proudly. And this he did.

"Stephen gave his life doing the job he loved. He was a committed, brave and selfless leader that thought nought of himself and everything of those around him. He was a loving husband to Carley and a totemic man of the Regiment. The tragedy has deeply hit the men, not just of D Company, but across the Battalion. That grin of his will be hard to replace."

"Brave, selfless, stoic and good craic with it – these are just some of the accolades lauded on Lance Corporal Stephen McKee by his fellow soldiers. They are the mainstay of every Irish soldier and he was their very embodiment."

Captain Quinton Lenegan Royal Marines

Captain Quinton Lenegan Royal Marines, Machine Gun Platoon Commander, D Company, 1st Battalion The Royal Irish Regiment, said:

"Stephen's death is a terrible and heart-felt loss. In my time with 1 R IRISH he certainly had an impact on me. From the moment he joined my Platoon I realised that Stevie was special and I was truly inspired by the motivation he displayed in all aspects of his job.

"He was a selflessly committed work and family man who faced every challenge head on and never faltered. His friendly ‘happy go lucky' attitude made him extremely popular and he was embraced by the Platoon.

"Lance Corporal McKee was a man who was destined to excel; Stephen had just passed his Machine Gun Section Commanders course and was due to play a key role in the forging of a new Fire Support Platoon.

"The excitement that he displayed when we discussed the prospects of forming a new Platoon was truly inspiring and is testament to the utter professional that he was. His commitment to the Battalion and loyalty to his brothers in arms was humbling. Stephen was not willing to rest on his laurels after his Machine Gun course but instead deployed on Op HERRICK 13 and joined his Platoon.

"Stephen joined the men he loved and has paid the ultimate sacrifice for us, his Battalion and his country. Stephen will live on in my memories and his wife Carley and his family will be in my thoughts during this turbulent time. Rest in Peace Steve."

Captain Benjamin Cox, 11 Platoon Commander, D Company, 1st Battalion, The Royal Irish Regiment, said:

"He joined an experienced Ops Company with many an Air Assault operations to its name and settled into the pace without missing a step. From the off he added value, and that he continued to do so throughout all of this is testament to his fine character.

"The Platoon's thoughts and prayers are with Carley, Stephen's wife, and with his brothers and cousin in the Battalion: Gareth, Michael and Richie. He will be sorely missed by one and all in this close knit Battalion and his memory will live on."

Warrant Officer Class 2 John Brennan

Warrant Officer Class 2 John Brennan, Company Sergeant Major, D Company, 1st Battalion The Royal Irish Regiment, said:

"I could start by saying he was a rough-cut diamond and everyone would know what this means, but not with Stephen. He was not a rough-cut diamond or a bit of a rogue – he was genuinely a nice guy and a doting husband and as such I feel privileged to have known him.

"In work he was always enthusiastic; a happy go lucky soldier with a budding career ahead of him, having just passed a Machine Gun Section Commander's course. Lance Corporal McKee will be truly missed, not just by me – he has left a huge hole within the Machine Gun Platoon and even more so throughout the whole Company, but it does not stop there – If you did not know Lance Corporal McKee you would have most certainly heard of the McKee name within the Battalion.

"It is not the first time I have served with one of the McKee family, and I feel extremely fortunate to have done so; this is a sentiment that is shared throughout the Company and the Battalion.

"I would like to mention his brothers Lance Corporal Michael McKee and Ranger Gareth McKee, of whom I had the pleasure of serving alongside on the last Operation in 2008, and his cousin Corporal Richie McKee whom I have yet to serve with.

"I feel honoured to have met Lance Corporal McKee's parents and I can see why the McKee family, through their parents, have earned themselves the reputation of being such genuine people.

"Lance Corporal McKee has made the ultimate sacrifice, however, in our memories he will live on. Our thoughts at this most difficult time are with his wife, Carley, whom he has left behind. I also extend them to his parents, Heather and Bobby and the wider McKee family. These words will bring little solace but we as a family Regiment are feeling his loss most keenly."

Lance Corporal Jason Orr, Machine Gun Platoon, D Company, 1st Battalion The Royal Irish Regiment, said:

"I first met Stephen through his brother Michael. It didn't take me long to realise what a warm hearted and true all round good lad Stephen was. When he asked me to be part of the guard of honour at his marriage to Carley, I was delighted and proud to do it. Although, I did tell him that I was worried about whether I would fit into my Number 2 Uniform in time for the occasion.

"At the beginning of 2010 Stephen and I both moved to Machine Gun Platoon. He was the type of guy who was always there to lend a hand and the first to volunteer to help out. He never complained with his lot.

"He just knuckled down and got on with the job, but always kept an eye out for others. It was his nature that he would never see you stuck and would be right by your side when you needed him.

"Professionally he was brilliant. He loved his soldiering and was keen to continue his career. He enjoyed the challenge of the machine gun section commander's course and couldn't wait to join his mates on the front line. He hated the idea of not being able to help his mates.

"My thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Carley, his parents Heather and Bobby and his brothers and sisters Michael, Gareth, Robert, Rebecca & Kelly. I know Stephen was a big family man and loved them all dearly.

"I've lost a true friend but I know he's looking down on us now with that big loveable smile of his."

"Stevie was a true friend. I'll remember him as the quiet man but when he spoke he had me on my knees in laughter, he was an utter gentleman and I'll miss him always."

Lance Corporal Glen Crooks

Corporal William Haighton, Javelin Platoon, D Company, 1st Battalion The Royal Irish Regiment, said:

"My thoughts are with you Carley, Richie, Michael, Gareth and the rest of the McKee family. You were a true hero and a loyal friend - reunited with your daughter, RIP mate; gone too soon!"

Lance Corporal Glen Crooks, Javelin Platoon, D Company, 1st Battalion The Royal Irish Regiment, said:

"Stevie was a true friend. I'll remember him as the quiet man but when he spoke he had me on my knees in laughter, he was an utter gentleman and I'll miss him always. My thoughts go out to the McKee family especially Carley, and the McKee brothers."

Lance Corporal David Pepper, D Company, 1st Battalion The Royal Irish Regiment, said:

"My thoughts are with all the McKee family through this hard time. Stevie was a good friend and we had many good times while we were in B Company together. He will be sadly missed by everyone in the Company."

Ranger Wayne McCreery, Machine Gun Platoon, D Company, 1st Battalion The Royal Irish Regiment, said:

"My thoughts are with the McKee family at this sad time in their lives. I had the privilege of being with Stephen on the whole of his last day with us. He was a true gentleman who made our time here a lot easier and when you worked with Stephen you always knew the job was being done right.

"We had many laughs together and our last few weeks here won't be the same without him. Stephen is and always will be a credit to the McKee family and we will sorely miss him. Rest in peace mate. You were a good friend and you won't be forgotten."

Secretary of State for Defence, Dr Liam Fox, said:

"I was deeply saddened to learn of the death of Lance Corporal Stephen McKee. The tributes of those he served alongside describe an exemplary soldier who was committed to his duty and his friends within The Royal Irish. I send my deepest condolences to his family and to those with whom he served so ably."

A List of 10 Misconceptions about PTSD

While reading through my favorite blogs, I came across this article that Wife [Widow] of a Wounded Marine linked to 10 Common Misconceptions about PTSD. I find it interesting an x-ray technician school would post such an article, perhaps it shows the importance PTSD is gaining?

I found the link beneficial and am sharing it here. On a personal note, I have been diagnosed with PTSD due to trauma I experienced. My PTSD has zero to do with the military, which is why I have not mentioned it before now. The reason I bring this up is because of number #3 on the Misconception List, "PTSD sufferers aren't victims." I take issue with the word victim. In my personal definition a victim; is a person who has died due to a traumatic or tragic situation. A survivor; is a person who has survived a traumatic or tragic situation. I realize some view this distinction as semantics, but it is important to me. I also haven't met a person who has worn the uniform and freely dons the title of victim. Of course there are those who disagree with me, like I said the above is my personal definition.

Honoring LCpl Liam Tasker And Theo

Lance Corporal Tasker deployed to Afghanistan on 8 September 2010 as part of 1st Military Working Dog Regiment. Having trained as an Arms and Explosives Search dog handler, he was attached to 1st Battalion Irish Guards on 19 February 2011.

Lance Corporal Liam Richard Tasker

LCpl Liam Tasker was born on the 11 December 1984 in Kirkcaldy, Fife, Scotland. He joined the Army in 2001 and was originally a vehicle mechanic in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. His passion though, was always dogs which led to his transfer to the Royal Army Veterinary Corps in 2007.

A trainer who had a natural empathy with dogs, he was a rising star within the Dog Training group. In 2010, he was posted to 104 Military Working Dog Squadron, St Georges Barracks, North Luffenham, Rutland, part of the 1st Military Working Dog Regiment.

From the onset of his operational tour in Afghanistan, he provided strong search and clearance capability for units across Helmand Province. In a short period of time, he had significant success locating Improvised Explosive Devices, weapons and bomb making equipment. His success undoubtedly saved many lives.

Lance Corporal Tasker was an outgoing, jovial and friendly character. He was extremely popular within the Squadron. His easy going, confident approach belied a consummate professional. He always strived to be the best and within the Squadron he was one of the best and he will be sorely missed by all in the Squadron.

He can never be replaced and will always be remembered. He was a fun, friendly, talkative character who always wanted the best from his dog, his troops, and himself.

He leaves behind his mother Jane Duffy, his father Ian Tasker, his brother Ian and his two sisters, Laura and Nicola, and girlfriend Leah.

Liam's family said:

"There are three words that best describe Liam, larger than life. He lit up every room he walked into with his cheeky smile. He was the best son, grandson, brother and friend you could ever wish to meet. He died a hero doing a job he was immensely passionate about. We are so proud of him and everything he's achieved. Words can't describe how sorely he will be missed.
"Sleep well Liam you are forever in our hearts."

"It is a challenge to put into words what Lance Corporal Liam Tasker meant to those he worked with."

Girlfriend Leah Walters said:

"LT never met anyone without touching their lives in some way. The amount of support both I and his family have received in the last day alone pays testament to this.

Lieutenant Colonel David Thorpe LANCS, Commanding Officer 1st Military Working Dog Regiment, said:

"It is a challenge to put into words what Lance Corporal Liam Tasker meant to those he worked with. To his friends he was a mate who could put a smile on your face; he was that man who you wanted around and who you wanted to spend time with.
"To the 1st Military Working Dog Regiment he was a strong, reliable soldier and an expert 'Dog Man'. He genuinely loved the dogs he worked with and was always able to get the best out of them. He was one of the highly qualified Dog Trainers in Afghanistan and had spent time at our training establishment making sure that the new soldiers coming out of training had the best possible skills and experience imparted into them.
"Epitomising the hardworking, determined and ambitious nature of our very best soldiers, he wanted to go to Afghanistan. He wanted to ply his trade in the harshest of environments, to be outside of his comfort zone and he wanted to be successful. He was. The work he did in his 5 months in Afghanistan saved countless lives, of that I have no doubt. He flew the Royal Army Veterinary Corps' flag high; he led from the front and made us proud.
"Lance Corporal Tasker wanted to go far in the Army and he had all of the attributes needed to be a career soldier, with capacity to spare. His ability to command whilst maintaining his sense of humour had already marked him out as one to watch. His loss has hurt every single one of us today. He will be missed. He will not be forgotten.
"My thoughts and condolences and those of the whole Regiment go out to his family and friends."

Jason Redman, US Navy SEAL, and Wounded Warrior

Why is Lt. Jason Redman, a US Navy SEAL someone you should know? It's not his 18 years of service, or how he was an enlisted man before becoming an officer. It's not because he survived being shot in the face by the enemy, which shattered his face, obliterating his nose and one cheekbone. Or how he endured "The land of stares and gawks" otherwise known as public while he recovered from his wounds.

Redman admits to, "Looking really rough," through his recovery. He wore an eye patch, had a tracheotomy tube, along with other tubes coming out of his face, and was fitted with an external fixator or a "halo" which was attached directly to his skull by metal rods which made wearing normal clothing impossible to wear.

It is obvious the above makes him an incredible man, but what makes him an exceptional man is how he gathered all of the above experiences using them for inspiration to start a non-pfrofit called Wounded Wear to help his brother's and sister's recovering from their wounds.

Wounded Wear hands out kits containing a meadium-weight jacket, polo shirt, three T-shirts, pajama pants and a luggage roller. Free tailoring for uniforms and clothing is also available. Redman believes after being at war for so many years in two different countries the public should recognize the sacrifices of America's Wounded Warriors. As a result the T-shirts say "Scarred so others may live free." These shirts can't be bought, they are only for those who've received a purple heart.

Wounded Wear works with a foundation formed by SEAL Marcus Lettrell to raise the necessary funds to visit the wounded in facilities like Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington D.C. and the Navy hospital in Bethesda passing out clothing kits.

Baking For The Troops

Words For Warriors is starting a new program called Baking For The Troops. Volunteers will meet once a month to bake homemade goodies to be mailed to deployed men and women. It has been expressed that homemade baked goodies are amongst the most prized mail one can receive.

Ever wonder what kinds of questions seven and eight year olds have for our deployed service members? A teacher at the local school and one of my biggest supporters had her 2nd/3rd grade combo class write letters this week. I enjoyed reading them so much I thought I would share my three favorite letters before I mail them off.

Dear Soldier,

Do you have a riot shield? And maybe a pistol? Have you used a rocket launcher? Where are you stationed? Do you drive a tank?

Mom You're Crazy

As is our custom, I took my two boys to buy doughnuts after church. After picking out our favorites we started heading for the 10 items or less check out. We got there at the same time as a gentleman, who waved us ahead with a pleasant smile. There were two people in front of me, but I wasn't in a hurry.

I turned to the pleasant man, motioned to his hat and said, "You are a Veteran?" He smiled sheepishly, adjusting his hat, "Yes Ma'am. Vietnam was my war." I smiled wider, "Thank you very much for serving our country." The woman standing in front of me, who was of his generation turned, giving her thanks for his service.

Now that the gentleman was throughly embarrassed he looked at my boys with a sly smile, "I flew helicopters. Hueys." Both of my boys, ages 5 and 7 looked at him as if he were a bonafide Super Hero. They both yelled out, "That's sooooo cool!"

We continued to talk in line. He shared that the oxygen tank had nothing to do with his service in Vietnam. He was diagnosed with cancer, and had a mild heart attack back in August. He explained with a smile, "I kept asking the doctors what a mild heart attack was, they never gave me an answer. So I decided you survive the mild heart attack, so the big one can get you later."

It was my turn to pay, I looked down at the conveyer belt, the gentleman was purchasing a dozen roses and a few oranges, so I told the cashier I was buying his items too. She looked at me like I sprouted a second head. The gentleman told me no, I didn't have to do that. It was at this moment I heard my 7 year old say, "Mom, you're crazy." I smiled down at him, "Yes I am. Thank you." I gave the cashier my mom look that says, do want I tell you to, NOW as I told her again, "I'm paying for his items. Bag them up." I paid for the groceries.

The gentleman (who's name I never got) thanked me, asking me for my name, which I gave him before wishing him a good week and leaving with my doughnuts.

The Vietnam War was over before I was born. I can only imagine how this man was treated when he came home. He had a wonderful personality, able to make jokes of his rough times. Buying his few groceries doesn't really seem like big enough thanks. I think he knows my thanks came from the heart though.

I challenge everyone to be crazy with me. Do something nice for a Veteran, no matter how small to show their sacrifices have not gone unnoticed.

Restrepo and Ssgt Friend

Today I watched Restrepo by Tim Hetherington and Sebastian Junger for a second time. The first time I watched it alone in my home. I read Sebastian Junger's book WAR about 6 months prior (and was enthralled by it), so I wasn't sure what the documentary had to offer that the book didn't cover.

Restrepo helped put faces to the names in WAR, making the people and the events even more real. This is why, when a Ssgt Friend who's been deployed 3 times, and has the physical and emotional marks to prove it, wanted to watch Restrepo, I asked him not to watch it alone. I asked him to watch it with me.

I watched Ssgt Friend go through a variety of emotions in 93 minutes. At times it seemed like he was right there with them, firing at the enemy. He was focused. Alert. Then came Ssgt Friends laughter when the guys horsed around, dancing or rough housing like boys do. Then came the tears, remembering when it was his friends who had been killed. Then anger. At one point in the movie, one of the men reports a man walking on a roof. Upon hearing the report Ssgt Friend immediately yelled, "Kill the F&*%er." Ssgt Friend didn't realize he spoke out loud when he said it.

When I asked Ssgt Friend what he thought of Restrepo, he told me it was real. The looks on the faces of the men who where interviewed, their pain, he said he feels that. One of the men in the Platoon, Hijar I think, said, "I hope my brain learns to process this differently. I never want to forget. This is the reason I appreciate everything I have." Ssgt Friend agreed, "I never want to forget either."

I am a book worm and will always recommend a book over a movie. I highly suggest anyone interested in an amazingly real view of living on an Out Post in a combat zone without any outside motivations and politics read WAR by Sebastian Junger. Junger doesn't write about the relationships forged in the Korengal Valley, he shows his reader over and over again through their actions. Restrepo was a fast pasted version of the book, also a must see. In my opinion both were about brotherhood, honor, never forgetting. Both are worth your time and money.

A Community Morns An Officer, A Marine, A Son-Rob McElrath

The pain was tangible today when approximately 700 people attended the service to honor and celebrate the life of Officer Rob McElrath. A procession of approximately 100 vehicles. State and Federal agencies from all over Northern California and Eastern Nevada were present to honor their brother. The Patriot Guard Riders from several areas held a corridor of flags at the entrance to the Assembly Of God Church. The Susanville Soaring Eagle Blue Star Mother's held flags in support. The procession began at the Lassen County Fairgrounds, down Main Street until it turned left at Weatherlow making its way to the Susanville Assembly Of God Church in Richmond.

Knowing parking and traffic would be difficult I drove straight to the church, but my husband and sons were in town on a Cub Scout event. My husband told me the Cub Scouts saluted everyone in the processional. Due to the amount of support, there was not enough parking at the church. Vehicles turned off their engines parking their vehicles in the closed street. Speakers were placed outside the church in order to accommodate all of the mourners.

The memorial began with the playing of Amazing Grace on bag pipes by a fellow officer. Amazing Grace was followed by the playing of TAPS. Speakers included Sheriff Dean Growdon, Chief of Police Jeff Atkinson, a childhood friend, two of his daughters, his mother, and siblings. Each speaker shared a little bit of the Rob they new and loved. These stories made everyone laugh amongst the tears.

What kind of man was Rob?
He was a Peacemaker. He was kind and polite. He loved his children. He loved his brothers and sisters of law enforcement. He loved being a Scout Sniper and a United States Marine. He loved watching the movie Blazing Saddles with his children.

Several stories of Rob were shared including when he waded through icy Susan River to rescue a dog. Of hearing a report of a foot chase in his neighborhood while off duty, in which he caught the assailant, wearing his patrol shirt, gun belt, boots, and jammie pants. And when he used a riot shield to help protect another officer from a buck who needed freeing because its antlers were caught in a chain, that was wrapped around a telephone poll.

It is clear Rob McElrath left this earth better than he found it. As his friend from 5th grade put it, "Rob is a 2-For, when he meets Saint Peter he will say, Another Marine reporting for duty, and another Officer reporting for patrol."

It is clear Rob will be missed by the Community he served.

The community also hurts for his children during this painful time. Rob is survived by his four children. The oldest two were adopted by Rob from his wife's first marriage.

A Fallen Officer and Marine

Susanville and the surrounding areas have suffered a monumental loss. Officer Rob McElrath was shot and killed on January 2, 2011. Everyone is invited to honor the life of Rob with a Candlelight vigil Tuesday, 7pm at Banner Lassen Medical Center. Please bring your own candles.

Rob served as a United States Marine before starting his law enforcement career. He started his career in Lassen County as a Correctional Officer, and a Reserve Deputy before he became a Deputy Sheriff. He later joined the Susanville Police.

Joanna McElrath, Rob's wife and her boyfriend, Robin Glen James have been arrested and are await arraignment scheduled for Monday. The Susanville Police department have called on the assistance of outside law enforcement agencies to assist in their investigation leading up these arrests. Read Sheriff-Coroner Dean F. My thoughts and prayers go out to Rob's family. I know Rob will Guard the Gates To Heaven proudly.

UPDATE: Rob McElrath's funeral procession will be held on Saturday, January 15th at 10:40am beginning at the Lassen County Fairgrounds and ending at Susanville Assembly of God Church on Richmond Road for a public memorial.

A Tragedy

Captain Mark E. Kelly of the United States Navy, a Veteran of Desert Storm, and a current Astronaut is married to Congresswoman Gabrielle Gifford. Congresswoman Gifford was one of the people shot at a Tucson Arizona Safeway. It has been reported by the Huntington News surgeons are optimistic about Congresswoman Gabrielle Gifford's recovery. There is also a report five individuals are in critical condition. The deceased are reported as Federal Judge John Roll, a Congressional Aid to Gifford, and a nine year old child.

The political finger pointing and mud slinging have already begun on the reasons for this tragedy. What I know is a Federal Judge, who was under Federal protection by the U.S. Marshals for recent death threats, a Congressional Aid, and a nine year old child lost their lives today; while Congresswoman Gifford and five other's fight for their lives.

My thoughts and prayers are with the families of those affected by this tragedy. My they all find peace.

Reception For Nick Moody

Lorina Moody, Nick's mother has invited ALL of the wonderful people who supported her and Nick while Nick was incarcerated in the UAE to a Thank You reception. The reception is being held on Saturday, January 8th, at the Elks Lodge in Susanville, California from 4 to 7 pm.

I have high expectations for 2011 on a personal and a professional scale. I hope to be touching more lives, and helping more people, making sure that no one feels forgotten about. As a country we should embrace those who are willing to sacrifice not only their time with their families, but their lives, for us.

In the year that Words For Warriors has been supporting our Deployed servicemen and women we have not had a single casualty. Most of all I hope and pray I can say the same this time next year.

Welcoming Nick Moody Home At Reno International Airport

Words For Warriors was honored to attended Nick's Welcome home Thursday night December 30th at Reno Airport. I regret not getting any photos, but the above news coverage is comprehensive. Nick was all smiles when I introduced myself. He even made a hearty laugh when I gave him a welcome home note from a friend he served with over 3 years ago.

Lorina, Nick's mother held a constant smile thanking everyone for all their support in bringing her son home. Lornia acknowledged it was the individual people of this nation who helped give her son back to her, not the bureaucracy whom runs this country.

Nick seemed a little shy and shell shocked at the out pouring of support. His friend confided that Nick wasn't the kind of person who liked a lot of attention. I know Nick is grateful for all of his supporters, and a little in awe of the strangers who came to help him in his hour of need. Because of everyone who worked so hard, Nick can continue with his life, life as a normal college student. Good luck Nick.

The Best Christmas Present This Year...

The best Christmas present this year was a phone call from Afghanistan on Christmas Day from a Marine. This Marine told me how the artificial tree I'd sent brought Christmas to Afghanistan. The wrapped presents under the tree were a bonus. This particular Marine received 3 wrapped Nerf guns, among other random items. He told me how he gave the Nerf guns to his friends. After one friend unwrapped it he was so excited shouting, "I ALWAYS WANTED A NERF GUN WHEN I WAS A KID. THIS IS THE BEST CHRISTMAS EVAH!" The Marine shared other stories with me involving the Nerf guns and his friends, promising me pictures when he gets back to the States.

This morning I got an email from the Marine. In true Marine style it was short, only containing one sentence. It said, "Thanks again for everything you sent it definitely helped make Christmas and I really appreciate it!"

You and your friends are most welcome Marine. Thank you for all the sacrifices you make for US.

Nick Moody Should Be On US Soil December 29th

Lorina Moody is proudly announcing that her son, Nick Moody not only has his passport, and a valid Visa, but also two plane tickets. One ticket takes him to JFK airport on December 29th, the other ticket takes him to Reno Nevada on December 30th. His plane is due to arrive in Reno at 5pm.

Once Nick arrives in Reno there will be a gathering at the Grand Sierra Lobby for all of his friends, family, and supporters. The family also hopes to have a Homecoming in Susanville for those who can not make it to the airport to welcome Nick home. These details are not available at this time, but I will update when they become available.

Christmas Spirit

In all honesty I haven't really been in the Christmas spirit this year. Shopping makes me claustrophobic this time of year. Don't get me wrong, I have bought presents, although the majority of what I bought was sent downrange to Afghanistan to those I know will truly appreciate them.

This evening while driving on Main Street in Red Bluff California I saw a man standing tall on the street corner holding two signs, SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, and MERRY CHRISTMAS. He stood alone waving at those who honked in support. He asked for no money, or donations.

I pulled over deciding I needed to know more about this man. The man's name was John. John has lived in Red Bluff his entire life, except when he was in the Army. John told me with a smile, "I was in the 101st Airborne back when they jumped out of planes." John served in Korea, he was stationed at the DLZ. I thanked John for his service, and for standing out in the cold as a reminder to be grateful for those who stand for us. I asked John if he'd been out every weekend this month. "Well," John said looking down at the ground, "I've been out everyday this month for a couple hours, except one day I wasn't out because it was raining and my signs weren't laminated yet."

John and I continued to talk, he told me he had friends and family at home, he left them to come stand on this corner with his signs. "I only live 30 minutes away," John motioned with his hand, "Where I have food, warmth, and family. Even this cold street corner is better than Korea, Iraq, or Afghanistan any day." John tells of the support he's received from Red Bluff, about how a couple of "kids" who were leaving to fight in Afghanistan, and be stationed in Korea stopped to talk with him.

I left John with a renewed sense of the meaning of Christmas. John was a man, a Veteran who was committed to stand a vigil of support through the month of December no matter what the weather, reminding a town to remember those who sacrifice so much for our freedom.

In a time when I hear from the deployed America is at the mall, while we are at War I would like to Thank John for his vigil, for his reminder to remember what is important this Christmas. It's not what's under the tree, it's those who protect us. MERRY CHRISTMAS.

Could Nick Moody Be Arrested Again And Sent Back To Prison?

Nick's Mother Lorina Moody who has now set her sights on Nick's safe return home for the New Year, as he will not make it home for Christmas has big concerns. Nick's 30 Day Visa expired while he was in prison in the UAE on a charge of carrying weapons related paraphernalia. Nick was arrested on September 29th and released on December 1st. It should be noted once his case was settled, it took the government 22 days to release Nick's passport, after much work from his lawyers.

Immigration states it is illegal to be in the Country without a valid Visa. Therefore a 16,000 AED ($4355) fine is being enforced. Nick's lawyer is working hard to get the fine waived since Nick was detained and held in prison with no way to extend his Visa. Nick's lawyer is meeting with Immigration Officials on Sunday. If Immigration decides Nick is at fault for his lapsed Visa he will be arrested and returned to prison to await another trial for being in the Country with an expired Visa.

The Moody family continues to ask for support in keep Nick's case in the forefront of the news and politicians minds as well as our hearts and prayers.

Nick Moody Is Coming Home!

The National reported the Judge overseeing Nick Moody's case ruled Nick could go free with a suspended sentence of three months in jail and a fine of 15,000 Dirham (4,084.42 US Dollars). Nick was warned if he were to be arrested again he would serve jail time.

Nick is quoted as saying, "I'm glad I am free. It's over."

Nick's family has posted celebratory thanks on the Help Bring Nick Moody Back Home Facebook page. They are hoping to have Nick home for Christmas... no doubt the only item on his Mother's List to Santa.

As a school child I remember coming home and asking my Mother where she was on December 7, 1941. She wasn't born until 1944, so gave me one of her I-am-not-that-old looks before she told me of a family vacation. When she was 13 years old her father took her family on an ocean cruise to Hawaii.

As the teenagers gravitated towards one another she and her two sisters became friends with a boy. (I do not remember his name.) My Mother's family accompanied the boy and his family to the Pearl Harbor Memorial. It was while they stood over the USS Arizona, the boy looked at my Mother in a way she would never forget and said, "My grandfather is still down there. I wish I could have met him."

In total there were 2,117 Sailors and Marines killed in action or who died of their wounds, while 779 were wounded. A sum of 215 Soldiers were killed in action or died of their wounds, with 360 wounded.

Ultimately 15 Medals of Honor, 51 Navy Crosses, 53 Silver Crosses, 4 Navy and Marine Corps Medals, 1 Distinguished Flying Cross, 4 Distinguished Service Crosses, 1 Distinguished Service Medal, and 3 Bronze Stars were awarded to American servicemen who fought at Pearl Harbor. It should be noted that not all of those who fought were trained to fight. An African-American cook by the name of Dorie Miller who served aboard the West Virginia took over an unattended anti-aircraft gun on which he held no training. His actions made him the first African-American to be awarded the Navy Cross.

Hero's are survivors of circumstance. Each and every man and woman who resided at Pearl Harbor on this tragic day are Hero's. Some Hero's survive to tell their stories. Other Hero's remain only in our hearts and memories. Honor the sacrifices of the fallen and their loved ones by lowering your Flag to half-mast. Find an event near you Honoring those who fought at Pearl Harbor. Shake a survivor's hand.

More Delay's For Nick Moody

Nick Moody was supposed to have his trial today, Monday December 6th after being arresting in Abu Dhabi Airport in the UAE for possessing accessories that accompany a firearm. (Nick was not carrying a firearm.) Nick is an inactive guardsman after serving in Iraq and Afghanistan to work for a Private Security Firm in Iraq.

His trial has been postponed until next Monday, December 13th.

Nick told CNN,"He's not sure how much more prison time he could face if convicted, but he's prepared for the outcome of a judge's decision."

Lorina Moody, Nick's mother told CNN, "Our son is the type of individual who would not have willingly broken the law." Lorina is continuing to ask for prayers and letters to State Officials until Nick's case is resolved. Nick and his family are hoping this issue will be resolved so they may spend Christmas together.

Nick Moody Out On Bail

Nick Moody was released today, December 1st with bail from Al Wathba prison in the UAE after being arrested in the Abu Dhabi airport on September 29th. Being released on bail in the UAE means the government keeps his passport until his verdict is handed down. Nick's trial is set for December 6th.

November 29th Nick Moody Update

Below is a letter written by Nick Moody's Mother, Lorina Moody regarding his current status, wishes, and suggestions for how you can help. Nicks Trial was supposed to start today, Monday November 29th but has been postponed. Lorina writes;

5:00am We received a call from the US Embassy in Abu Dhabi. The counselor wanted to inform us that because of a communications glitch between the Court and Al Wathba prison, none of the prisoners from that facility were taken before the court today. She said she has heard that this rarely happens, but it has been known to happen. The counselors tried to contact officials about when Nick’s case would be rescheduled, but were unable to attain an answer today. She said they would try again tomorrow morning and let us know whatever they find out.

The counselor said when she visited Nicholas on Wednesday, he was holding up well. Of course he is anxious for this to be over, but that he looks well. Also she said that the lawyer did visit Nicholas on Sunday. She did not know why Nicholas has not called home this week, but spoke of a new phone system recently installed at the prison, with limited number storage associated with each prisoner.

Having been just over 30 minutes since this call occurred, I am still shaken. Today I hope to reach out to other US officials that have shown interest in Nick’s case. Due to a Privacy Act, officials out of our state of residence, can only act upon the family’s direct request and I think we have to sign a release of information form, so that they may make inquiries. We have had contact with Congressman McClintock of CA, so far no other CA offices have responded to us. We have had contact with Senator Reid’s office, Senator Ensign’s office, Representative Heller’s office, all of Nevada. As grandparents, my parents have made contact in their home state of OR with Congressman Walden’s office. We signed the release form and faxed it to Senator Bennet’s office in CO. We've attempted contact with other officials, but have not received responses.

The only thing I can think to do with this delay is reach out even further and ask that if possible everyone that can, make repeated contact with US officials and make our voices louder if we can. If an official shows any interest in assisting, but needs us to make initial contact, please pass this information to me so that I can direct my energies toward those already aware and inclined to help.

Keeping a forward and positive rally is the only action I can think to apply at this time. As soon as we’ve heard “what next”, I will post it.

The Future...

I hope everyone enjoyed a fantastic Thanksgiving Day with their Family, Friends, and Loved ones. I know I did. I was even blessed with a quick chat from a friend in Afghanistan, which really made my week.

Looking towards the future there are a few things to address...

First Nick Moody's trial is set to start Monday, November 29th. I plan on posting whatever information I can find for updates. If you run across information I don't have please email me.

Also slated for Monday, November 29th at 9pm Eastern on the National Geographic Channel is the premier of Restrepo which is the film that accompanies the book WAR by Sebastian Junger. I have not seen the movie yet, but have read the book, which in my opinion is one of the best books I have ever read dealing with Afghanistan. The book also chronicled SSG Sal Giunta's actions in which he was awarded the Medal Of Honor.

There are some administrative changes happening at Words For Warriors as we are working towards getting our non-profit status. There will be updates and changes made to the blog and our activities as time progresses. We are hoping this growth will give us the power to reach more people.

Medal Of Honor Recipient SSG "Sal" Salvatore Giunta

A Blue Star Mother Asks For Help For Her Son's Freedom

Today I was contacted through the local Susanville Soaring Eagle Blue Star Mom's asking for help. Lorina Moody's son, Nicholas Moody who served as a Corporal in the Nevada Army National Guard and who is a Veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan has been arrested in Abu Dhabi airport. Moody was on his way home from Iraq, were he had been working for a private security company when he was arrested at the Abu Dhabi airport. According to his mother the charges against Moody are possession of accessories related to firearms. His mother says the items in his possession were pertinent to his job and not dangerous. Apparently the problem stems from a forced lay over Moody experienced while waiting for his return flight to the US. He was arrested when he attempted to board his plane home.

Moody's court date is November 29th.

Lawyers have assured Moody's Mother UAE government officials respond favorably to US officials concerns. Nicholas's case weigh heavily on getting US Representatives involved. The Moody family are asking for repeated, non-stop contact until this case is resolved. They are asking that you contact your State Representatives as well as Federal Agencies. Knowing the power of social media the family has started a facebook page you can join here. The family also encourages the word to be spread on facebook, twitter, email, and any other way you can think of.

Congressman XXXXXX

It has recently come to my attention that one of our own, Nicholas Moody, needs our immediate assistance. We need you to please look into this matter and ask questions.

On September 29th 2010, Nicholas Moody was returning from Iraq to the United States where he was working as a security guard with a private security company. Nicholas was arrested at the Abu Dhabi airport on charges of possession of accessories related to firearms. The items in his possession were pertinent to his job and not dangerous. This event occurred due to the layover time between flights. Mr. Moody had to stay overnight in Abu Dhabi in order to catch the connecting flight to the United States the following morning. When he went to catch his flight the next day he was arrested.

My concern is that this young man did nothing wrong. He is a veteran who is a corporal in the Nevada Army National Guard. Nicholas has served tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. He has sacrificed for us and now desperately needs our support to get him out of this unfortunate situation.

It has come to my attention that the family has been informed that our government offers no assistance in regard to this situation. This is deplorable! Not just someone, but everyone involved in our global security should be concerned and asking questions about how this could have happened and how can we help resolve this situation and how we can keep this from happening again.

Our soldiers with our all-volunteer military deserve our support, whether they are on active duty or not. Nicholas Moody is an American citizen being detained in a foreign country due to a set of unfortunate events that he could not have foreseen or controlled. We need to get him home.

Nicholas has been sitting in Al Wathba Prison in Abu Dhabi for more than six weeks awaiting process of his case.

I am asking you as a taxpayer, as a voter and most importantly as a patriot of this great country, to involve yourself immediately. To ask questions and get answers about this case. Nicholas Moody has an Abu Dhabi court date of November 29th. We have heard that his case will be greatly impacted by United States interest.

When A Soldier Comes Home

When a soldier comes home, he finds it hard...

...to listen to his son whine about being bored.

To keep a straight face when people complain about potholes.

To be tolerant of people who complain about the hassle of getting ready for work.

To be understanding when a co-worker complains about a bad night's sleep.

To be silent when people pray to God for a new car.

To Control his panic when his wife tells him he needs to drive slower.

To be compassionate when a businessman expresses a fear of flying.

To keep from laughing when anxious parents say they're afraid to send their kids off to summer camp.

To keep from ridiculing someone who complains about hot weather.

To control his frustration when a colleague gripes about his coffee being cold.

To remain calm when his daughter complains about having to walk the dog.

To be civil to people who complain about their jobs.

To just walk away when someone says they only get two weeks of vacation a year.

To be forgiving when someone says how hard it is to have a new baby in the house.

The only thing harder than being a Soldier...

is loving one.

Operation Postcard Contest Winners

We received over 100 entries from across the Country. It took five judges over an hour to decided on the winners. We have five winners and four honorable mentions. The competition was stiff. This is the 100th post for Words For Warriors. It is also Words For Warriors 1st Birthday. What is our birthday wish? That every Veteran and Active Duty Service member know they are appreciated, loved, and missed. THANK YOU.

Wednesday, November 10th marks the 235th Birthday of the United States Marine Corps. The Marines were birthed as a quick reaction force. It was the Marines amphibious warfare that proved the corner stone of the Pacific Campaign in World War II. It was their never surrender attitude that kept the Red Curtain at bay in Korea when out numbered at the Battle of Inchon and the Chosin Reservoir, even after being inflicted with mass casualties.

Marines have been involved in every well known, and lesser known, operations to protect and defend freedom in various countries and people of many nationalities around the world. A Marine, Always Faithful, Never Backs down.

What do you get a Marine on their birthday? Well giving to their brothers is always a good idea. Some notable charities are Soldiers Angels Project Valour-It (which are currently in a competition to see who can raise the most money for injured Warriors, Marines are in the lead) Semper Fi Fund and the Wounded Warrior Project are just a few that could use some Birthday gifts.
